Crisis of Democracy in Developing Countries
Outline
A number of developing countries have gone through democratization since the 1980s. The Third Wave of Democratization (Huntington 1991), however, did not necessarily result in consolidated democracies. The newly established democratic institutions have often failed to resolve the existing conflicts among the various societal groups, and some groups have attempted to deviate from the democratic institutions. In some cases, the democratic institutions gradually eroded, and the authoritarian regimes returned. This research project aims to classify the failures of democracy and find the causal mechanisms which bring about the problems through comparative case studies.
