Compilation of an Extended 2011 Japan-Taiwan International Input-Output Table

Outline

This study is a part of our long-term research plan that tries to explore the dynamism of international production networks, focusing on the functional upgrading of production, in East Asia from the 1990s to the present. For the challenge, we are preparing a series of international input-output tables for at least Japan, Taiwan, Korea, China, and Malaysia, covering the years 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2011, and 2016 (and 2021 hopefully). As the first step of the long-term plan, we started the "Compiling and Use of Extended Japan-Taiwan International Input-Output Table" study group in FY2020-FY2022, and are constructing a Japan-Taiwan international input-output table by trade channel (through exporting or non-exporting firms), which target year is set for 2016. This time, as the second step, we would like to form a successor study group to construct an extended Japan-Taiwan international input-output table for 2011. In this project, we are planning to subdivide trade flows and intermediate transactions in the new table into four categories characterized by trade channel (through exporting or non-exporting firms) as well as by ownership of firms (foreign-affiliated or domestically-established). Note that it is an attempt to explicitly introduce some kinds of firm heterogeneity into the input-output data. Utilizing the extended table, which considers different types of fragmentation through foreign direct investment, we intend to overcome the weakness of using industry-level data when analyzing the functional upgrading of production. Finally, we also investigate how the tabulation method, data reconciliation procedure in particular, affects the completed table.
