Legal and political institutions in the sphere of social norms: Economic analyses of colonization and the right of a married couple to use separate surnames

Outline

This research project aims at studying the economic effects of legal and political institutions relevant to culture and social norms. Precisely, it will address the following two topics.

1. Long-term socioeconomic impacts of colonization: Evidence from German Togoland.
This research aims at empirically exploring the long-term socioeconomic impacts of German Togoland, as viewed as a “model colony.”

2. Establishing the right of a married couple to use separate surnames and its impacts on marital formation and dissolution.
This research aim at empirically exploring the impacts of establishing the right of a married couple to use separate surnames on marital formation and dissolution.
