Formation of multi-layer production structure in Taiwan's semiconductor industry
Outline
These years Taiwan’s semiconductor industry has been attracting the global attention. One reason is that the world-wide shortage of ICs has made lots of enterprises and governments understand the importance of Taiwan which has about three fourths share of global silicon foundry market. While TSMC, the world’s largest pure-play foundry, possesses the state-of-the-art manufacturing technology, Taiwan’s semiconductor industry is also the major supplier of conventional ICs.
The purpose of this research project is not only to point out Taiwan’s semiconductor industry has multi-layered structure that produces the ICs with several generations of technologies but also to illustrate how that structure has been formed. The structure is expected to be shown as the product of the interaction among TSMC and other IC makers. The roles of the firms that utilize foundry services as well as Taiwan’s government are also examined.
