Land Policies in the Post-Cold War Africa
Outline
After the end of the Cold War, a number of African countries have revised their land policies. Some countries have adopted new land laws aimed at strengthening individual rights for land use, while others have implemented land redistribution policies for small peasants. These policy changes have been made against the backdrop of recent political developments, including democratization and marketization, as well as a greater focus on land issues in the context of post-conflict peace-building. This research project attempts to clarify the recent land policies in African countries and examine the consequences. For this purpose, the members of the project will investigate the following inquiries: 1) what kind of land problems have taken place in the country, 2) what policies have been taken to tackle the problems, and 3) what have the consequences of the policies been.
