Organization of Production and Distribution in the Iranian Apparel Industry

Outline

This project aims to clarify the structural characteristics of production and distribution in Iran’s apparel industry by using data and concrete examples collected through the twenty years of fieldwork in Iran. In particular, it will focus on the fact that Iranian apparel firms are extremely small in size but independent, and they are hardly ever involve vertical or horizontal business integration. They have been, so to speak, in a “weakly-organized” situation for years, and their production and distribution systems are constructed taking this situation for granted. At the same time, we will give consideration to the political and social factors that maintain the situation. The project will be able to present a pattern of industrial structuring in the late starters, as well as the desirable path for “industrialization” and “economic development” from the viewpoint of regional context.
