FY 2015/2016 Research Topic: A-4-1
Business and Human Rights in Emerging Markets: Designing Japan's CSR Strategies

Outline

The project aims to 1) research the recent developments in frameworks, discussions, and practices aimed at implementing the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs), 2) analyze how Japanese companies incorporate the UNGPs into their business and operations, especially in countries where the laws and regulations are not adequate to address human rights issues such as labour rights, environmental rights, and land related rights, and 3) suggest how the Japanese government should encourage and support companies to respect human rights not only as part of their risk management but to achieve competitiveness in the global market. Further, this project is designed to serve as a platform for facilitating effective participation by the relevant stakeholders from business entities to civil society organizations, as well as to promote discussion and consultation on their needs and gaps in order to clarify the policy agenda and priorities to be integrated in the future National Action Plan.
