Global brain circulation and innovation dynamics in East Asia

Outline

The concept of “global brain circulation” highlights the important roles played by highly educated/skilled immigrants in cross-border transfer of knowledge and technologies. While existing studies have elucidated how high-tech immigrants and returnees help the economic development of their home countries, this research project explores the linkages between global brain circulation on one hand and innovation and creation of new industries on the other hand. In so doing, we will focus on different roles played by high-tech immigrants with different types of knowledge and backgrounds. The project comprises of three studies: (1)case study of Taiwanese high-tech immigrants in Silicon Valley and their contribution to the creation of new industries in Taiwan. (2) case study of returnees from US in start-up ecosystem in China. (3) econometric analysis of the contribution of high-tech immigrants to innovation. The project attempts to benefit from synergy between quantitative and qualitative analysis, and comparison among different economies in East Asia.
