Family Politics in Sri Lanka
Outline
In Sri Lanka, Gotabaya Rajapakse won the 2019 presidential election. Gotabaya not only appointed his brother Mahinda, who conducted authoritarian politics as president during 2005-2015, as prime minister, but also filled the administration's leading post with his family. How did the Rajapakse clan, who lost power in 2015, regain power? Why did the people reinstate the Rajapakse family? In this study, the structure and dynamics of authoritarian politics in Sri Lanka will be elucidated through analysis of the power base and political methods of the Rajapakse family.
