Rural Development Administration and People in Northern India

Outline

In India, the administration of rural development has been carried out by the Block Development Office, related government offices and “Panchayati Raj System”. The Block Development Office is a grassroots-level rural development organisation established by the government, and the Panchayati Raj System is a local self-governing body for rural development.
This research project seeks to clarify the role, performance and problems of the Block Development Office, related government offices and Panchayati Raj System in rural development. It also looks into the role of rural people in the administration of rural development mainly through participation in the Panchayati Raj System. The research will be conducted by analysing the survey data obtained in two districts in Uttar Pradesh, a state in northern India. The direction of changes in rural development administration may be discerned based on these analyses.
