Informal Practices in Post-Soviet Societies: The Cases of Kazakhstan and the Kyrgyz Republic

Outline

This project aims to examine the informal practices in Kazakhstan and the Kyrgyz Republic. Like other post-communist states, the official institutions in these ex-Soviet Central Asian republics are operated, supplemented and at the same time subverted by informal practices such as bribery and the use of personal networks. Focusing on these two states, which share a common Soviet legacy but differ in terms of political stability and economic development, this project explores the ways in which informal practices are standardized, and the factors behind the prevalence of such practices.
