FY 2014/2015 Research Topic: C-43
Air Cargo and Airports in Asia

Outline

International division of labor can attained through the transportation of components and raw materials. Therefore, the importance of international distribution is increasing and has supported the international division of labor in recent years. Means of transport in international distribution include marine transportation, air transportation, and land transportation. Although marine transportation is overwhelmingly performed based on weight, air transportation accounts for a remarkable rate in terms of trade volume. For example, when comparing the average growth rate of marine cargo traffic and the air cargo traffic over the past ten years, marine transportation grew 3.2% while air transportation grew 4.7%, indicating air transportation has a higher rate of growth than marine transportation. Also, 65% of all air cargo (126.8 billion ton kilometers) is related to Asia (2011 value). It is clear that the examination of air cargo in Asia will lead to an understanding of the international distribution and international division of labor in Asia.
