The Politics of Redistribution in New Democracies
Outline
Democracy secures political freedom and political equality. Theoretically, such freedom and equality are expected to lead to socioeconomic equality. However, socioeconomic equality has not necessarily occurred in the developing countries that have experienced the third wave of democratization. This research project seeks to reveal the political conditions that affect the level of socioeconomic equality in new democracies. We particularly focus on redistributive politics and seek out the political factors attributable to the gap between the preferences of the median voter (mostly in the lower income class) and government policies.
