Geo-Economic Dataset for Asia
Data Sources and Notes : Japan
Administrative Divisions
Japan is divided into 47 prefectures as the primary-level administrative divisions and GEDA adopts this division.
GDP
In “ Kenmin Keizai Keisan ” (the national account of Japan by prefecture), the manufacturing sector is divided into 20 industries, which is less than the 24 industries used in ISIC rev.3. Thus, we need to use other data sources, especially in order to separate the automotive industry from the broader transport equipment industry. Here, we use the “census of manufacturers” provided by the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry, Japan. We use value added to divide industries; if this is unavailable, the number of employees or the number of establishments is used alternatively.
