Role of Suppliers in Global Value Chains (2018_2_40_005)

Outline
The purpose of this project is to produce a collection of papers that provide new theoretical and empirical insights into the roles that suppliers play in global value chains (GVCs). By conducting in-depth investigations into the evolution of selected sectors over time in which suppliers have played active roles and synthesising these and other empirical studies with relevant theoretical literature, this project seeks to shed light on the conditions under which suppliers increase their returns from innovation and reconfigure value chain governance. Through this, the project attempts to challenge the conventional GVC literature that has regarded suppliers as passive and subordinate actors in the face of overwhelming power exercised by lead firms.
