Unsuccessful FTA Negotiations(2017_1_40_015)

Outline

The majority of literature on the determinants of the formation of FTAs concentrates on successfully negotiated and concluded FTAs. In contrast, this study puts analytical focus on unsuccessful negotiations, specifically negotiations that were launched but failed to reach any conclusion. Unsuccessful negotiations are interesting cases because they tell us both why FTAs were needed and not needed. By identifying the countries that have had many unsuccessful negotiations and conducting an in-depth case study analysis of actual unsuccessful negotiations, we will reveal (i) why negotiations were initiated; and (ii) why such negotiations were suspended. The analysis of unsuccessful negotiations will shed a new perspective on the determinants of FTAs.
