Revolutionary Cuba’s Quest for Survival: Comparison with Vietnam

Outline

Since the end of the Cold War, it has been debated whether the Cuban revolutionary regime would survive under an aging first generation leadership. Cuba restarted its economic reforms in 2011, maintaining a single-party system. Our project considers that it would be now constructive and interesting to compare Cuba with Vietnam, which has introduced rather more drastic market mechanisms into its economy.
The Cuban government under Raúl Castro is reported to have observed Vietnamese experience, when Castro’s administration was starting to analyze the possibilities for economic reforms. On the other hand, these two countries have many geopolitical and historical differences. In this project, we will do a comparative analysis of Cuba with Vietnam from the viewpoints of political regimes, and macro/microeconomic theories. Two Cuban economists will also participate in the project.
