Rural Development in Vietnam: Transformation of the Rural Economy under Rapid Economic Growth

This study aims to analyze the characteristics of the transformation of the rural economy in Vietnam, in the context of the nation’s rapid economic growth. Although the Doi Moi reform has brought rapid industrialization to Vietnam, the country’s economic growth still owes much to its export of agro-produce such as rice, coffee and cashew. Despite the fact that the value of agricultural production has decreased to below 20% of GDP, the number of rural inhabitants still occupies 70% of the total population. It is envisaged that such features of the rural economy will characterize the nation’s future economic growth.
This study focuses in particular on the modernization of agricultural production and the emergence of non-agricultural economic activities in rural areas. From a macro point of view, the study evaluates how agricultural production, non-agricultural economic activities, agro-produce export and labor supply from rural areas have contributed to Vietnam’s national development, and discusses the consistency with modern economic theories. Meanwhile from a micro point of view, the study also analyses changes in the behavior of economic entities as well as changes in production and labor market structures, and looks at the mutual effect of these changes.
This study adopts a multi-faceted approach to its analysis, consisting of development economics, agricultural economics, and area studies.
