Dealing with Differences: The Politics of Tolerance in Developing Countries

Why and how do individuals, groups, and states acquire attitudes or institutions that accommodate differences in ethnicity, religion, and ideas? This research project aims to answer this question through the examination of: (1) contact with and perceived threats from out-groups, (2) institutions that deter inter-group conflict or majoritarian tyranny, and (3) the way in which the state defines its citizens. Case studies including India and Turkey will be included to illustrate conditions that enhance political tolerance despite political instability/insecurity.
