The Frontier of International Input-Output Analyses

The Institute of Developing Economies, JETRO, has been carrying out a project of constructing international input-output tables for more than 30 years. These unique datasets are well-recognized as the only international I-O tables currently available, and thus have been highly rated by various users world-wide.
In the last few years, however, some prominent research/academic institutes abroad have simultaneously launched new projects for constructing international I-O tables, such as the WIOD project directed by the University of Groningen (upon the mandate of the European Commission), the OECD I-O database by the OECD, GTAP by Purdue University, AISHA by the University of Sydney, and EXIOPOL and CICERO for environmental analyses.
While this clearly reflects an increasing demand for international I-O data based on the prospect of its potentially wider application potential, it also implies that there will be a great deal of scope for possible collaboration between different organizations for harmonizing and fostering statistical assets.

In light of the above, this study group addresses the following important and common issues:
(1) To provide an opportunity for each of the projects to present themselves on the characteristic features of individual databases and their potential applications ;
(2) To identify the similarities and differences among ongoing projects, and identify possible areas of collaboration;
(3) To establish a grand scheme of inter-project collaboration and exchange of information, in order to facilitate talks not only among the project organizers but also between the producers and users of I-O tables, and thus promote the scope, quality and accessibility of individual databases.
