Regional Financial Cooperation in Asia Revisited: Progress and Issues

In this research project we analyze the past progress and present/future issues in ASEAN developing economies (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam) with regard to the financial cooperation frameworks (Chiang-Mai Initiative (CMI), Asian Bond Market Initiative (ABMI) and Asian Bond Fund (ABF)), which were established to prevent/minimize future financial/economic crises. Especially for presenting policy recommendations, we will focus on: (a) conducting comprehensive analyses and extracting future issues on the parallel frameworks of CMI, ABMI and ABF, (b) carrying out country studies on their market enhancement measures in view of if they are functionally combined with the regional financial cooperation frameworks, (c) providing implications on policies for promoting the financial markets of other ASEAN members (Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar), and (d) possible assistance and roles played by the Japanese government in the areas of legal and institutional reforms.
