Dealing with Differences: The Politics of Tolerance in Developing Countries
Outline
Why and how do individuals, groups, and states acquire attitudes or institutions that accommodate differences in ethnicity, religion, and idea? This research project aims to answer this question through the examination of (1) contact and competition between people of different opinions, (2) institutions that deter inter-group conflict or majoritarian tyranny, and (3) the way in which the state defines its citizens. Case studies, including India, Kazakhstan, and Turkey, will reveal conditions that enhance political tolerance despite political instability and insecurity.
