FY 2010/2011 Research Topic: 4-10
Political, Economic, and Social Issues in Latin America
Outline
Latin American countries benefited greatly from the rise of primary products prices leading up to the middle of 2008. However, the economic crisis affected these countries significantly. Many leftist governments which were formed criticizing neo-liberal policies introduced in the 1990’s are now facing serious economic difficulties. The countries in the region have serious social problems such as drug abuse and poverty. Despite the seriousness of the situation, there is very little coverage in Japanese on Latin American affairs. This project aims to analyze actual Latin American situations from the perspectives of political science, economics, sociology, and international relations. We are planning to publish two volumes of a journal titled “Latin American Report”.
