FY 2010/2011 Research Topic: 1-02
Economic Integration and its Impact on Industrial Locations in CLMV

Outline

Since the CLMV countries joined the WTO and AFTA in the 1990s, they have reduced trade barriers across borders and promoted integration with East Asian economies. Meanwhile, domestic economies have also been integrated through market liberalization and improvement of transportation and infrastructure systems. This parallel advancement in economic integration, which was induced by lowering transport costs and the free movement of firms and people, has affected industrial locations significantly. In the first year of the project, regional data from CLMV countries, as well as Thailand were collected, while methods of analysis were reviewed and studied. In the second year, statistical analysis will be conducted on the spatial locations of firms, with use of the data collected in the first year. The following results are expected: (1) the statistical analysis will reveal industrial locations and changing patterns as well as factors behind industrial locations; and (2) policy implications will be derived for industrial location and regional development policies.
