Inter-firm Dynamics of Notebook PC Manufacturing Industry and the Growth of Taiwanese Firms
This research project attempts to reveal the process of the rise of the capabilities of Taiwanese ODM firms operating in the notebook PC value chains with a special focus on the changing pattern of inter-firm dynamics among the major actors of the industry. Specifically, it explores the following two points: (1) how the shifting patterns of inter-firm relationships in the industry have molded the knowledge flow among firms in the notebook PC industry and (2) how the Taiwanese suppliers exploited the knowledge flow among firms to enhance their capabilities and consolidate the competitiveness to become the world’s dominant suppliers of notebook PCs. By so doing, the project seeks to elucidate how the interactions among major actors of the industry have shaped the process of capability formation by suppliers from late-industrializing economies.
