The Growth and Transformation of Korean Chaebol in Post-Developmental Era

"Chaebol" are diversified business groups in Korea by which a family is the controlling shareholder and is also directly involved in the management. During the past 20 years, the Korean economy experienced two major turning points; economic liberalization of the late 1980s and the financial crisis in 1997. Chaebol have survived and continued to grow, although there were some problems during the process. The purpose of this study is to analyze how chaebol have responded to the changing economic environment and how they have changed themselves in the process. In this analysis, we focus on the business strategy and internal structure of the chaebol, particularly the allocation of resources such as funds and personnel and group management organization.
As a condition to restrict the business strategy and internal structure, we note the nature of chaebol as a family business and the antitrust policy.
