FY 2009/2010 Research Topic: 1-05
Life Security System for the Elderly in the Emerging Countries

Outline

While Japan’s society has been experiencing accelerated ageing, the East Asian and Latin American emerging countries are also beginning a similar process, although their speeds are very different by country. There are many problems related to the ageing of society; one of the most important issues is the poverty of aged people. In this study project, we analyze the situation of poor aged people and how their life is supported. Social institutions that protect aged people’s life will be analyzed from the perspective of political economy with attention to critical social gerontology. We will study the cases of South Korea, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, India, South Africa, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Cuba.
