A Study on Mekong Region: New Development of Economic Corridors

Outline

The Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) Economic Cooperation Program, implemented at the initiative of the ADB and FTA, is regarded as a driving force of regional integration. It is hoped that access to harbors for landlocked countries and regions such as Laos and Yunnan Province in China will be improved by the development of cross-border infrastructures and the promotion of trade.
In order to vitalize cross-border trade, soft infrastructure development, such as Single Stop Customs Procedure and the Truck Passport System, is necessary in addition to hard infrastructure development.
Economic development in the emerging border areas in the Mekong region is diverse, as are the problems it faces. In this research project, we will focus on cross-border movements of goods and labor force and development of special economic zones in the border areas.
