International Symposium

Poverty Reduction and Beyond: Development Strategies for Low–Income Countries

On November 29th, 2007 in Tokyo, IDE-JETRO held a symposium—together with the Asahi Shimbun and the World Bank—examining the usefulness of ODA. The efforts underway to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) have been only partially successful thus far. East and South Asia, led by China and India, have reduced poverty by significant margins, however, many countries in Sub Saharan Africa are still quite far from achieving the goals and their future progress in reducing poverty is likely to depend upon continuing external assistance. The purpose of this symposium was to promote discussion and debate so as to help improve the tools now in use and to point the way to fresh and promising possibilities. Participants were requested to propose changes that could increase the impact of poverty reducing measures now in use; new policies and institutional mechanisms; and alternative strategies for pursuing the MDG goals in countries where progress to date has been slow. The keynote speeches by Dr. William R. Easterly of New York University and Dr. Shahid Yusuf of the World bank were followed by presentations by other experts and a panel discussion in which participants engaged in active dialog on the better way of the international assistance and the development strategies to the world‘s poorer countries and related topics posed by audience members. IDE-JETRO offers its sincere gratitude to the distinguished speakers and panelists—and to the more than 300 audience members—for making the event a confirmed success.
