Rise of the Next Giants? : Anatomy of BRICs
On December 20th, 2006 in Tokyo, IDE-JETRO held a symposium—together with the Asahi Shimbun and the World Bank—examining the rapid rise of the so-called BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China), focusing on the sustainability of their rapid growth and roles played by public and private sectors.
The explosive growth of emerging economies in recent years, in particular the BRICs, has captured the attention of economists and investors around the world. Since a 2003 Goldman Sachs report charting their rise, Japanese investors have looked to the BRICs with growing interest, attracted by their vast consumer markets, soaring growth rates and increased demand for capital.
Dr. Alice H. Amsden of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Dr. William John Martin of the World Bank delivered keynote speeches, and leading economists from each BRIC country spoke on their respective economies in detail, including the mechanisms of financial and labor markets and the potential for technological innovation.
A panel discussion followed the speeches and presentations in which participants engaged in active dialog on factors driving the BRICs’ rise and related topics posed by audience members.
IDE-JETRO offers its sincere gratitude to the distinguished speakers and panelists—and to the more than 400 audience members—for making the event a confirmed success.
