Sea Power in the Pacific
After the World War II, Pacific islands have been built in regional security alliance led by USA with Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. However, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and Fiji created their own regional alliance and tried to keep distance from the American initiative since the second half of 1980s. Moreover, China started to strengthen the linkage of trade, business and aid with Pacific islands very recently. As the development of seabed mining, offshore oil and natural gas field became active, Pacific islands claim their sovereignty in seabed on the basis of exclusive economic zone.
This symposium will argue change of sea power structure in the Pacific and what strategy Japan should take.
