Makuhari New City Open Seminar
Half a Century of Indonesian Economic Development: Continuity and Change
The IDE-JETRO is going to hold the Makuhari New City open seminar in collaboration with the Global Communication Institute, Kanda University of International Studies (KUIS).
This time, we will invite one of the most renowned researchers of Indonesian studies, Professor Hal Hill from the Australian National University, and will discuss the current situation and future prospects of Indonesia as well as its development process in the last half century.
Indonesian economy continued to grow under the Suharto administration from the end of the 1960s. However, it was hit hard by the Asian financial crisis and its regime collapse afterward. After that, Indonesia regained economic growth and political stability in the mid-2000s, which made many Japanese companies expand their business in Indonesia. But now, Indonesian economic growth has slowed again due to the rapid decrease of resource exports, which is mainly caused by the recent economic slowdown in China.
In this seminar, we will reconsider the challenges that Indonesia faces and how to revitalize economy in the long run by utilizing its rich resources and 250 million people.
